The Syrian Commission of Jurists issued a memorandum to the United Nations in which it accused the Assad regime of committing a "war crime" against the environment, nature and the societal economy of Hama and Idlib.
On Sunday Aleppo Today TV correspondent in Hama reported that the Assad regime began to cut down olive trees in the city of Kafr-Zita in northern Hama countryside, which added to civilian losses as they have already lost homes and properties due to regime and Russian bombardment.
The reporter quoted some residents of the city saying "The regime are cutting fruitful trees in Kafr-Zita as a revengeful act against civilians, because the city contains more than six thousand acres planted with olive trees." The olive tree is a symbol of peace and an important factor in Syrian economy.
According to the Commission's memorandum to the UN; the regime and its allies committed a "war crime" by cutting down thousands of trees in the cities of Kafr-Zita and Al-Lataminah, calling for immediate intervention and to force Russian forces to respect international agreements and treaties, and to stop allowing Assad militias from continuing the cutting of fruitful trees, and to hold the perpetrators accountable to international justice.
The Commission also detailed in its note, that the militias were distributed to work in groups and were ordered to cut olive trees and pistachios, a source of livelihood for Syrians, and pointed out that the number of trees threatened to be cut is estimated to be 2 million trees, in which the average tree is 75 years old. Secondly, is how these militias have looted equipment for wells, which total at 880 wells. And that those actions are a direct threat against Syria's economic future and a clear crime against the Syrian people. They are also an official war crime under the Rome Statute and the Geneva Conventions.
Final statement in the note is how Russia has not only killed and displaced civilians, but also allowed pro-Assad militias to commit a new crime under its record of many different crimes that have created a humanitarian, economic and natural disaster.
